Florence Sun A SHENZHEN schoolgirl will have a report on her implementation of green projects in Shenzhen briefed at the U.N. 60th anniversary summit in New York in mid-September, in which Chinese President Hu Jintao will take part. The first Chinese member on the Junior Board of U.N. Children’s World Summit for the Environment, Xu Hai-ting has been busy carrying out the green projects in the city and reporting the latest progress to UNEP. Though Xu said she was lucky to stand out from over 1,000 excellent participants, it was actually her long-standing concern for water resources and fabulously improvised English speech that earned her the only representative for Asia and Pacific of the Junior Board. After returning from the summit in Japan last month, she began to implement the four commitments agreed upon at the summit — use renewable energy sources; plant 10 trees every month; share innovative ways to conserve and reuse water wisely; use environmentally friendly bags and minimize landfill waste in her school and community. “I realized my green dream at the summit, as I not just shared my green experience with more people but brought home some latest green concepts and implemented them in China,” said Xu, who will fly to Sweden later this month preparing for next year’s summit. The 12-year-old Xu has already taken the board member responsibility and formulated a detailed work plan. She is preparing to hold a seminar in her school, Nanshan Foreign Language School, about how to conserve water resources. Every household in her community will plant 10 trees each month to offset carbon emissions due to her efforts. Since Xu lives at Shekou, she always keeps an observant eye in the area and finds that rubbish processing and plastics bag pollution remain the big problems particularly in the old Shekou industrial areas. She has called attention and support from the city environmental protection bureau to jointly improve the situation.
